2014 VOLUNTEER MEETING AT PINE HOLLOW ARBORETUM

Dear Members and Friends of the Arboretum:

Spring is on its way and we need your help!

To help launch Pine Hollow Arboretum’s 2014 season, we are inviting you to an informational volunteer meeting on Thursday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. If you are interested in lending a hand and want to learn more about how you can help make a difference please join us.

Some of our needs include:

Help with gardening under the direction of our property manager

Be a greeter at the Visitor Center on weekends (flexible hours)

Help with our Spring/Fall Open Houses and various workshops

Assist with fundraising and promotional activities

Our active season runs from April through October. If you are interested in joining a great group of energetic and nature loving people please join us and bring a friend! The meeting will be held at the Visitor Center, 16 Maple Avenue, Slingerlands.

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS 2012

Despite the recent snow fall we are sure Spring is on the way! We wanted to send out a short update on what's been going on behind the scenes at Pine Hollow Arboretum. We’ve had a busy winter planning for an exciting opening season. John Abbuhl has placed his annual tree orders and will again be planting throughout the arboretum this spring. We have also planned a number of programs and educational activities for our members and friends of the community so they can continue to experience the beauty of the property. This is all in addition to ongoing gardening and upkeep projects.

We have so much on our “To Do” list that we thought we’d put the word out asking for some extra hands to pitch in. You know the saying, many hands make light work. If you are interested in getting involved please consider volunteering. Some of our needs include: staffing the visitor center (flexible hours), help with gardening projects, cataloging and maintaining our collection database, beautifying our grounds and pitching in at various events throughout the year and more.

Since we are a not-for-profit organization volunteers are vital to our success! We will be having our first informational volunteer meeting at the Visitor Center (16 Maple Avenue, Slingerlands) on the 1st day of Spring, Tuesday, March 20 @ 10 a.m. We hope you can come. GIVE TO THE PINE HOLLOW ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in 2013, the Pine Hollow Arboretum Endowment Fund was created to secure the Arboretum’s future as gifts are invested and continue to grow while the Arboretum uses annual interest to fund the operating budget. You can give to the Pine Hollow Arboretum Endowment Fund any time of the year. At our web-site Home Page click on Join & Support and check the donation box and put “For Endowment Fund” in the comments section. If you do not wish to donate online, you may instead send a check to Endowment Fund, 34 Pine Hollow Road, Slingerlands, New York 12159. Just make a note “For Endowment Fund” on the memo of your check and your gift will be acknowledged accordingly. The Arboretum is a 501(3) not-for-profit independent organization. Donations are tax-exempt according to law.

LETTERBOX AT PINE HOLLOW ARBORETUM

What is letterboxing?
Letterboxing is an outdoor hobby perfect for people of all ages! It combines elements of hiking with treasure hunting, allowing visitors of the Pine Hollow Arboretum to explore the property in a new way. A list of clues can be retrieved from the Visitor’s Center during our weekend hours or you can access them at www.atlasquest.com under Pine Hollow Arboretum. These clues will lead you to each letterbox hidden on the property but don’t forget, the boxes are not in plain view so you need to search for them! They may be hidden under some plantings, leaves or wood debris. Currently, there are 7 hidden boxes. Each letterbox contains a unique, hand-carved stamp, which you can (using your own stamp pad) stamp in your own journal as you find each letterbox, proof of your success! Try to collect as many stamps as you can as you explore the arboretum!

Supported by members and friends our land will be preserved in perpetuity for the benefit of our members, community, town and bioregion. We aspire to be a world-class environmental education resource and will grow and develop as our membership increases and program outreach continues to expand. We need you to become involved in the exciting days ahead.
Pine Hollow Arboretum is a collection of trees and shrubs arranged esthetically while maintaining a natural setting. There are twenty-five acres with over twenty-five hundred labeled or recorded items. The collection contains plants from the temperate climates of the world and represents the horticultural potential of our own climate.
