SUMMERGREEN

Pine Hollow Arboretum intern Mary R Martin has send some photos she took this year. Even with the long June dry spell, the bed of the Arboretum hollow had managed to stay moist. John Abbuhl reports that the new seedlings planted in the bottom clay soil this Spring are still alive and doing well. The few sandy hills and better drained banks that slope down to the hollow are the areas where a few plantings look like they are suffering damage and one or two of the new Spring seedlings planted there appear to have not made it. John cautions, you have to wait a couple of years to see how a new planting is doing.

Be aware the reproduction of photos will be of only medium quality. If that is a concern, you probably should not submit.

Summer Sunday Afternoons at the Arboretum

Come by the Visitors Center at 16 Maple Ave, Slingerlands, NY between 1 and 4 PM during July and August. Opportunites to enjoy the Arboretum and its setting include:
a self guided tour of "30 significant trees", letter boxing for beginners, introduction to nature journaling, and a variety of nature crafts . Light refresments available...Enjoy the season and the property!

Yoga at the Arboretum

The Yoga teachers at The Breathing Room in Delmar are embarking on an out door experience for all. They will have a class at the Arboretum on Mondy evenings at 6:30PM until 7:45PM. The hope is to be outside on the property weather permitting.. but the fall back is the use of the Visitors Center for an inside experience. HELLO MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE ARBORETUM

We would like to invite you to join us at the Arboretum this weekend May 5 and 6th, 2012 to launch our new season. The Maple Avenue Visitor's Center will be open from 10 to 4 both Saturday and Sunday. Come and see how many of the newly identified "30 trees" you can name. Bring the kids to enjoy a letterboxing experience. Letterboxing is an environmentally friendly activity that is a fun way to explore the Arboretum and is similar to a treasure hunt. Also, John Abbuhl will be offering a guided tour both days after 2 pm. Light refreshments will be offered.

The first annual Capital Region Arboretum To Arboretum Bike Ride will take place on May 19, 2012. Please join us! We will begin at 9 am at the Pine Hollow Arboretum in Slingerlands, NY and ride to the Landis Arboretum in Esperence, NY, where we will stop at their annual plant sale, which includes an extensive array of tasty baked (carbohydrate!) offerings! Participants may also begin at the Landis Arboretum, where there is extensive parking, leaving there at approximately 12:30 pm.

Parking at Pine Hollow is limited but available, including space at a nearby church.

Established in 2013, the Pine Hollow Arboretum Endowment Fund was created to secure the Arboretum’s future as gifts are invested and continue to grow while the Arboretum uses annual interest to fund the operating budget. LETTERBOX AT PINE HOLLOW ARBORETUM

What is letterboxing?
Letterboxing is an outdoor hobby perfect for people of all ages! It combines elements of hiking with treasure hunting, allowing visitors of the Pine Hollow Arboretum to explore the property in a new way. A list of clues can be retrieved from the Visitor’s Center during our weekend hours or you can access them at www.atlasquest.com under Pine Hollow Arboretum. These clues will lead you to each letterbox hidden on the property but don’t forget, the boxes are not in plain view so you need to search for them! They may be hidden under some plantings, leaves or wood debris. Currently, there are 7 hidden boxes. Each letterbox contains a unique, hand-carved stamp, which you can (using your own stamp pad) stamp in your own journal as you find each letterbox, proof of your success! Try to collect as many stamps as you can as you explore the arboretum!

Pine Hollow Arboretum is a collection of trees and shrubs arranged esthetically while maintaining a natural setting.
